About Us
The Examined Life was created by two homeschooling moms in South Dade in response
to the lack of secular homeschool groups in our area. There really wasn't
a place where we could discuss evolution, the Big Bang theory and data-driven cosmology without hurting someone's feelings. We decided to seek like-minded families that are teaching a secular curriculum to their children, particularly where science and history are concerned.
We have chosen to teach
our children by schooling the imagination, fostering critical and independent
inquiry, championing intellectual honesty and rigor, privileging the scientific
method, encouraging
the mastery of more than one foreign language and the open-minded study of
other cultures, relentlessly eliciting sophisticated writing skills, preparing
for AP placement tests in math, history, English, and the sciences. We
believe these objectives can be attained using a variety of learning styles
from very structured Classical systems to delight-driven and unschooling methods.
Our goal is to prepare our children to attend the best universities anywhere
in the world. They may or may not choose to go, but they will have that
choice. It seems to us that what is striking about homeschooling is not
how well children do--but that they do not do better. The possibilities
that homeschooling provides are astounding. We intend to fulfill that
potential.
Membership
Membership is open to local homeschooling families in the South Miami-Dade
area. We meet for play dates, study dates, field trips and other social
activities.
About Our Enrichment Programs
We write much of our children's curricula each year ourselves. We have decided
to freely share our efforts with other families that are pursuing academic
excellence in their home schools. For the 2009-2010 academic year, we have
developed a free Classical enrichment curriculum geared primarily at upper-elementary
to early middle-school
home
learners. It can be adapted up or down. The enrichment curriculum covers
the following topics: American History, World History, Latin, Art Appreciation,
Music Appreciation and Biology. It is organized into 36 weekly assignments
for each topic. The enrichment curriculum is available free to members
and non-members alike.
Our Values
We celebrate diversity. We value tolerance. We welcome families of all races,
lifestyles and sexual orientations that teach a college-preparatory secular
curriculum.
