Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who are we?

The Examined Life was created by two homeschooling moms in South Dade.  After a couple of years trying to fit in with the existing local support groups, it became clear that we had to form a group where we could say the word “Evolution” without offending someone.

2. What are our aspirations?

That our children have the opportunity to attend the best universities anywhere in the world.  Our children might not choose to do so, but those are our--the parents'--aspirations for them.  It seems to us that what is striking about homeschooling is not how well children do--but that they do not do better.  The possibilities that homeschooling provides are astounding.  We intend to fulfill that potential.

3. What are our methods?

Schooling the imagination, fostering critical and independent inquiry, championing intellectual honesty and rigor, privileging the scientific method, encouraging the mastery of more than one foreign language and the open-minded study of other cultures, relentlessly eliciting sophisticated writing skills, preparing for AP placement tests in  math, history, English, and the sciences.  We believe these objectives can be attained using a variety of learning styles from very structured systems to delight-driven and unschooling methods.

4. How do we propose to help each other?

Support; opportunities for play, for outings, for field-trips, and for friendship; the shaping of a true community; the sharing of information; fostering small local educational co-ops; possibly, eventually, a school, etc.
